In Final Fantasy X for the PS2 how do you turn the cloudy mirror to the celestial mirror?

I have the airship and have completed the first challenge at the arena in the calmlands. I made my way back to the forest in Macalania and have found the father and helped him return to his family. When I return the son is no longer there. However, when I climb the crystal road there is a woman standing there saying something about this being the easiest road to get to the temple. The son isn't there. What am I missing? I am unable to get any celestial weapons without access to this giant glowing sphere.
