What does Symbolic Significance mean?

My English teacher is having us to a character asys essay on "One Day in The Life of Ivan Denisovich", by Alexander Sikzhenitsyn. He says to include a paragraph on the "symbolic significance of a character". What exactly does this mean? Am i supposed to relate the character to another thing??
