What decides the weapon you are igned in the marine corps?

I am planning on enlisting in the united states marines and I wondered what decides whether you are given an M4, M16, M249, or M240? I ume you have to go through extended training in infantry school in order to become a machine gunner. And I would appreciate the input on performance differences between the M4 and the M16 A2/ A4
